Seoul ranked third in the world for hosting international conferences

The City of Seoul has been ranked third in a list of top international meeting cities for a third consecutive year. According to the ‘International Meetings Statistics Report’ published on June 15, 2018 by the Union of International Associations (UIA), which announces official statistics for international conferences, Seoul hosted the third-largest number of international conferences of any city in the world in 2017, a repeat of its performance in 2015 and 2016. Last year, Seoul Metropolitan Government hosted a total of 42 international conferences with 3,325 participants. Among them, 11 were large-scale international conferences with more than 1,000 participants, with 18,500 people participating in these conferences alone. This year so far, Seoul has held a total of 40 international conferences with 35,000 participants from January to October.

In an effort to host more international events, Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seoul Tourism Organization finalized the hosting of the ‘2020 international forum of American Society of Clinical Oncology’ and succeeded in attracting the general meeting of the ‘2021 International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology’ at its general meeting this year, which was held in Singapore on Oct. 24, beating out Tokyo and Greater Noida of India.

Earlier, Seoul attracted the ‘2020 Asia-Pacific Conference of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR)’ (2,000 participants), the ‘2021 International Volkssport Verband (IVV) Olympiad’ (5,000 participants), the ‘2022 International Communication Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)’ (2,000 participants), the ‘Horses in Education and Therapy International (HETI) Congress 2021’ (1,000 participants), and the ‘Annual Meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA)’ (1,000 participants), among others.

The general meeting of the ‘International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology’ is a large-scale international conference in which more than 2,000 obstetricians, scholars, and related researchers participate. This is the first time it will be held in Korea, and the third time in Asia. Seoul Metropolitan Government says that the conference was attracted through active co-marketing with related organizations.

It has been reported that the BOD of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology was impressed by the united efforts of Seoul Metropolitan Government (Seoul Tourism Organization), Korean Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology and COEX, and decided to hold its general meeting in 2021 in Seoul after hearing their presentation.

Joo Yong-tae, Director of the Tourism & Sports Bureau of Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, “It seems that the preference for Seoul as a venue for international conferences is rising, thanks to the worldwide interest in the summit meeting between South and North Korea and the positive influence of the Korean Wave. We will cooperate with related organizations to engage in co-marketing for the hosting of more international conferences in Seoul, considering that Seoul is solidifying its position as the No. 3 city in the world for hosting international conferences.”
